Card of the Day - The Hierophant

Here a card that doesn’t show up often in my readings, The Hierophant. The first thing that really caught my attention was how dull the robe is on The Hierophant. It is beautifully made, but the color is of a dull red. Old and dull. No fun and excitement. Strict rules apply. Everything has to be done accordingly. No surprises. Two children kneel before him. One frowning, one smiling. I am drawn to the smiling face. So, this “confinement” isn’t totally undesirable? The priest wears white gloves on his hands. He does not like to get his hands soiled. This card feels stifling. It will be interesting to see what it indicates later today.

Note, 2.6.2007, 12:04pm, I thought about this card a lot since yesterday. No doubt the card was drawn to express the stifling confinement of some old traditions. But the prominence of the smiling face just told me it was something more, or something else. Also, there were the keys on the priest’s hat. Robin Wood drew them to represent locking away of the free will. But my feeling was the opposite. I felt they were keys to knowledge and freedom. Combined with the smiling face, even though this tradition appeared to be strict and dull, but it had its reasons. It directs your attention from the outside to the inside. Behind all of this is the key to true freedom. This tradition wasn’t followed blindly. Maybe my attitude needs some readjusting.

Now, if the frowning face were more prominent, then it would be a different story. I am happy to get to know this card more in my own way, and at the same time reflecting on my inner feelings. Different views don’t mean who’s right and who’s wrong. We all look at things a little different. If we pay close attention to how we feel, the answer is there.
